Gardeners may disagree but we are lucky in Burgess Hill to have a dense red clay in our back gardens! Burgess Hill has a long history of producing bricks, tiles, flowerpots, and chimney pots, drain pipes and household items as well as the more whimsical Wyvern finials.

Burgess Hill Creative Community’s Pottery has space or 10-12 members per session and currently offers four sessions a week. We aim to accommodate all levels of skill and experience by sharing skills, we do not teach formally or run structured classes.

Our pottery studio is equipped with a 100 litre top loading kiln, three electric wheels, one of which is hand operated. We have tools and materials for members to create their own projects using hand building or wheel throwing techniques. We have a basic range of decorative slips, underglazes, and glazes for both earthenware and stoneware firing.

Whilst we expect you to come with your own ideas about what you want to make, we aim to guide our less experienced members through hand building techniques including pinching, coiling and slab building. When you feel ready, we can take you through the processes of throwing on the wheel but remember that persistence is key to developing any of the techniques!

Clay is a wonderful material with endless creative and functional possibilities.

To get involved in what we do, pop in, and have a chat and look at the studio. Unfortunately, we do not have disabled access as the pottery is up two flights of stairs. We run our sessions with shared values of inclusivity, cooperation, and respect for differences. We encourage our members to take an active role our weekly rota for general housekeeping and members who want to take on further responsibility or supervising sessions we can offer training.

The pottery sessions are frequently full, we do not run a waiting list currently but if we are full when you enquire, we can keep your details and contact you as soon a space becomes available.
